People’s passion for “pink” scandals is not a phenomenon of recent years. So it was always and, it is a given that it will be in the future. It doesn’t matter if what is accused has done it or not.
It is important that people are being tried and condemned permanently and irrevocably, without waiting for the ruling of any court. It is of little importance if this “justice” destroys people and sprinkles.
One such story, a tragic story, is also the one that starred by Hippocrates Exarchopoulos, the “Charlie” of the legendary rock complex “Nostradamus”.
The rise of both himself and the band was explosive. The fall and the destruction, however, was horrible, painful and destructive.
“Nostradamus” and “pink” complaint
In the 1970s politically troubled life had not stopped. There was music. There was also fun for those who had not entered the “eye” of the junta. At the beginning of that decade, then, he shone the star of “Nostradamos”.
It was one of the most famous Greek rock bands, a music that at that time made its first cowardly steps in our country.
Initially members of the group were Stelios Fotiadis, Hippocrates Exarchopoulos under the pseudonym “Charlie”, and singer Chris King. Shortly afterwards, the “four” ended with the addition of Despina Glezos (niece of Manolis Glezos and Yiannis Ritsos), who was a former Poll member. The top moment for the band was in 1972 when “Nostradamos” took part in the Thessaloniki Song Festival with the song “Give You Your Hand”!
The band’s appearance on stage was amazing by winning audiences, critics and the… award of the best new composer and performer!
The success had knocked on the door of the “Nostradamos” who met glory and recognition. It is indicative that the single song he won at the Thessaloniki Festival was aware of the absolute apostasy, after selling 9,000 copies in just a month!
In 1972 they released a album with the title “Nostradamos”, followed by seven singles, (give me your hand/Grandma’s fairy tales (1972), magical state/what happens (1973), were twelve children (1973), Moon (1974), and must/the world mute (1974).
In 1973 the band had climbed to the “Olympus” of its popularity. He gave one concert after another and no one could predict what was coming … In March of that years the band was on a tour of northern Greece. Suddenly at the Thessaloniki hotel who lived by the band members invaded police and security men and handcuffed to Charlie and the “Nostradamos” sound engineer!
Cause; The lawsuit for rape a student by Hippocrates Exarchopoulos and the group of the group! The 16 -year -old girl was found by police at the hotel and was taken back to Kavala where she surrendered to her parents who had filed the lawsuit.
Charlie in his testimony tells police that the 16 -year -old student is a fan of the band and followed in Thessaloniki from Kavala where they had given a concert without knowing it.
He knocked on the door of his room and he opened it as he did with all the admirers or fans of the band without the slightest sexual act. The room was also the sound engineer who was also arrested and mentioned the same events in his own testimony. “The two Nostradamos were charged with seduction of a minor and voluntary abduction for the purpose of a 16 -year -old student from Kavala,” the press of the time writes.
A few weeks later, before the case, the girl’s father arrives at the courts, in order to withdraw the lawsuit, asked for a huge amount of money. The “Nostradamos”, with the aim of stopping the negative publicity that only harmful to the popular group, agreed to give the money by making a fundraiser between friends and acquaintances to raise the amount.
This dark case ended there and one day as today, March 27, 1973, Hippocrates Exarchopoulos came out of prison.
The tragic story of Hippocrates Exarchopoulos
What had really happened, though? In the time that followed two scenarios saw the light of publicity … The first is that the whole story was a well -made case of blackmail by the girl’s parents who wanted to win three apartments but eventually … they threw their demands on a 300 -year -old (300).
According to the second scenario, the whole case was set up by the Hunting Security which did not see all this publicity that the … “long -haired beard and strange music” had with no good eye. It is a fact that after the case it was forbidden by the regime from playing the songs of “Nostradamos” on radio and television, while a circular reached the schools was published and on which the students were forbidden to go to the band’s concerts!
Beyond the scenarios, however, the reality is that this story with the complaint about him rape The 16 -year -old hit the band in a complete way and, in particular, did enormous damage to Hippocrates himself. According to his friends, “Charlie” was never again.
In 1974 he left the band which was dissolved the following years. Charlie, in order to pay off friends and colleagues for the money they gave to the girl’s family at the time, abandoned the music he so loved and was forced to work in popular centers, who then paid good pay.
He tried to make a solo career which, however, in no way reached the levels of “Nostradamus”. Perhaps the highlight of his personal journey was when again at the Thessaloniki Song Festival he sang in a unique way that moved everyone the song “Their Clowns”!
In fact, however, Charlie never managed to orthodoxically. He fell into drugs. The use brought abuse and somewhere there it is all over. In the 1990s Hippocrates was arrested for possession and trade of heroin. In the car in which he was, they were found – according to an indictment compiled by the Greek Police – arms and grenades. Hippocrates Exarchopoulos resulted in prison in prison in 1998 and this time was the last.
He was then arrested with his wife as 10.5kg of heroin (!) Had found an automatic Kalashnikov with two magazines, a Magnum Zastava Magnum revolver, a Tokarev pistol, 14 grenades, 13 detonators, bullets. In addition, according to the ELAS announcement, 4 million GRDs had been seized by drug trafficking as well as a precision balance.
Two years after his imprisonment and a few days before his trial he begins his last dose. He was found dead at the Tzanio Hospital, where the Korydallos Prisoners are hospitalized. It was March 21, 2000. Six days before his 47th birthday…
The death of Hippocrates Exarchopoulos, though for many, was fully expected, was shocking and for this reason, after all, a conspiracy theory was “born”, according to which Exarchopoulos did not die but was murdered as he was ready to speak and ” drugs And weapons.
